Bernice Buttigieg

Artist, Educator, Lecturer and Founder of Budding Artists Malta.

As an artist and educator, Bernice Buttigieg is passionate about inspiring creativity and nurturing the artistic talents of others.

With over twenty years of experience in both creating and teaching art, she brings a unique perspective to the classroom, blending her own artistic journey with a strong dedication to help students explore and express their creative potential.

As an Artist.

Bernice Buttigieg is a visual artist renowned for her work, primarily in acrylics and other mixed media on large canvases, featuring multiple layers and rich textures. Her favourite subjects to express herself artistically encompass a range from the human figure to still life.

Additionally, Ms Buttigieg is a resin artist, dedicated to craft sleek and glossy surfaces with bespoke designs in a myriad of colours on various surfaces.

Ms Buttigieg’s paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and collective exhibitions at various galleries and prestigious venues throughout Malta, amongst others: Auberge de France, Auberge of Italy, University of Malta (both Msida and Valetta Campuses), Zabbar Sanctuary Musuem and Cavalieri Hotel. Her artwork dots several public places in Malta and Gozo, whilst a number of her artworks reside in private homes locally and overseas too, mainly Scotland, Italy, Ireland and Spain.

As an Educator.

Ms Buttigieg’s teaching experience extends into various settings, including both the private and public sectors in different schools, communities, and special events.

She has worked with children across different age groups, from infants to pre-schoolers, to tweens and teenagers.

Bernice Buttigieg has been the first art educator to bring art to very young children, including toddlers as little from one year, and sometimes also younger, educating their parents about the power of Art as a tool in the Early Years and child development. Her Parent and Child Art sessions and courses do not only introduce young children to several artistic media and tools (whilst naturally keeping safety and security the top-most priority), but parents are also shown and inspired how they can extend learning through art at home using simple techniques and tools, mostly often found around the home.

As a Lecturer.

Ms Buttigieg hosts lectures and workshops at the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta for prospective Early Years and Primary educators (Bachelor of Arts in Education). She guides them on how art can be promoted as both a subject and a cross-curricular approach within their classrooms.

Bernice Buttigieg believes that art is a powerful means of self-expression and a vital part of human culture. Her teaching philosophy is centred around fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where students of all skill levels can feel confident in their creative abilities. She actively encourages experimentation, exploration, and the development of a personal artistic voice.

Budding Artists Malta is hence constructed on the ethos of Inspire, Motivate and Achieve: students, whatever their age and ability, are invited and inspired to embark on an artistic journey, guided and motivated throughout by the use of professional and high-quality education, gently guiding students to achieve their potential through Art.
