About This Course

At a young age the process of art revolves around the journey, rather than the result. Even if a young child’s artwork may not be fully understood by an adult, it will always remain meaningful to the young artist, if s/he has been completely immersed in the art-making process.

Drawing on the expression as an early years educator, an art teacher and an artist, enables Budding Artists to adopt the belief that it would be harmful to the child to strongly intervene in his/her creative process, thus focusing on enhancing the child’s artistic abilities by inspiring, motivating and guiding to achieve.

Classes are made up of small groups to ensure individual attention. This will help each child to feel supported and valued, and also feel comfortable in a secure and friendly environment.

During this course, students will:

  • Have the opportunity to explore and experiment with different materials, such as pencils, pastels different types of paint, paintbrushes, palette knives, collage and clay.

  • Realise that art can be created on diverse types of surfaces and not only paper. Such surfaces will include canvas, ceramics, fabric and different types of paper. Students will also be able to paint/draw on easels (provided by the studio).

  • Learn to draw, paint and model their surroundings from different perspectives, including still life, imaginative, landscape and seascape, copying from a picture, portraiture and human figure drawing.

  • Acquire artistic concepts, namely: the colour wheel, primary and secondary colours, complimentary colours, colour tones, blending, light and shadow, proportion, juxtaposition and shape and form.

  • Grow familiar with the history of art, even at this tender age. Students will be given the opportunity to learn about, observe and discuss the work of famous artists from numerous eras in the history of art. This will help the children understand that people have always created art in the past, and hence learn art in different contexts.

  • Be inspired and encouraged to create their own artwork. Although children will receive guidance by the tutor, at Budding Artists we believe that an artwork should have the artist’s own mark in it, placing more importance on the process, rather then the ending outcome.

  • Understand that art and creativity are a lifestyle. They learn to appreciate the aesthetics and the world around him/herself. Students will realise that beauty surrounds us, be it a bowl of fruit, a painting created by an artist two hundred years ago or a broken vase.
